Swim to Defeat ALS and the #GiveEmHeller Swim Team!
donation imageDear QSC Sponsors, Swimmers, and Friends: I am writing to you today with a heavy heart to ask for your help and assistance! One year ago my brother Kevin was diagnosed with ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Prior to his diagnosis, Kevin, who is two years younger than me was very active and was always swimming, biking and running! However, exactly one year ago, his life and that of his wife and two children was turned completely upside down when he was diagnosed with ALS. At the present time, he is putting up a courageous battle against the disease! However, in only one year, Kevin has lost his ability to speak, swallow and eat and he is now quickly losing his ability to walk and use his arms and is fed through a feeding tube. Last September he participated in the Bike Ride to Defeat ALS in Napa, California which is not far from his home in Menlo Park, a suburb of San Francisco. He was able to participate in the ride and was still able to ride at least 100 miles a week and his fundraising bike team raised over $50,000 to fund research to find a cure for ALS. He continues to ride a bicycle now, but he has traded his road bike for a three wheel recumbent bike. Kevin was an All American swimmer at West Point and a very successful Age Group triathlete. Unfortunately he can no longer swim or run and is now having difficulty walking and will soon be confined to a wheelchair. In order to play a small role in our brother’s battle with ALS, myself and my three siblings (John, Carol Ann & Kate) have decided to create our own challenge which we have named Swim to Defeat ALS and the #GiveEmHeller Swim Team! We are trying to get all of our friends and family members to join us to raise awareness about ALS by attempting to swim 500 miles in one week from Sunday July 19 to Saturday July 25, 2020. We are asking everyone we know to record their swim mileage for one week while swimming either open water or in a pool. I am asking for your help in any of the following three (3) ways: First, help us swim 500 miles between July 19 and July 25; Second, help us raise money ($) to fund research to defeat ALS; Third, help us raise awareness regarding this terrible disease known as ALS! I am hopeful that you will be able to swim as often and as many miles that you can between July 19 and July 25. Please be advised that both pool swimmers and open water swimmers can join our #GiveEmHeller Swim Team. In order to track the mileage you swim between July 19 and July 25, please e-mail your name and mileage totals to the e-mail address listed on the attached flyer (swimtodefeatals@gmail.com). In addition, I invite everyone to donate any amount that you can online our Swim to Defeat ALS swim team website at the address listed on the attached flyer (swimtodefeatals.org). However, if anyone would like to write a donation check you can mail any checks to my home address at 29 Coventry Lane Naugatuck, CT 06770 or the address provided on our #GiveEmHeller Swim Team fundraising page (please to be sure to write “Swim to Defeat ALS on your check). Please remember, no amount is too little and each and every donation to defeat ALS is greatly appreciated. However, I also wanted to advise everyone that raising awareness about the disease is just as good as making a donation. Simply by reading this e-mail and the attached flyer and my brother Kevin’s story everyone is helping us raise awareness about this horrible disease! Please feel free to share this correspondence and the attached flyer with anyone you know who might be interested in joining our #GiveEmHeller Swim Team and help us to Swim to Defeat ALS! Swimcerely, Dave Heller
