PHHS/VBC 5K for Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness
Sunday, October 24, 2021

The PHHS/VBC 5K for Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness is a 5K run and walk
to benefit Chaplin’s Veterans Base Camp.
My name is Lexi Smardon and I am a senior at Parish Hill High School in Chaplin, CT.
Every year, seniors need to complete a Capstone Project in order to graduate. My
project topic is focused on Veteran Suicide Prevention and Awareness.
In 2018, 6,435 Veterans died from suicide, making up 13.8% of all deaths by suicide
among adults. From 2005 to 2018, there has been a 6.3% increase in the amount of
Veteran Suicides (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Office of Mental Health and
Suicide Prevention). Although the VA is focusing more of its attention on this issue,
awareness needs to be made to the general public . Veterans sacrifice their lives for our
country, but typically, their mental health is neglected. This race is meant to not only
raise awareness about Veteran Suicide, but also to raise money for the Veterans Base
Camp to help more Veterans in need.

Race Information:
Location: Veterans Base Camp
                 108 England Rd
                 Chaplin, CT 06235

Race course: Race is out & back. Starts at the Base Camp, goes onto Canda Ln, onto South Bear Hill Rd, onto Cross Rd and turn around at the Chaplin Fire Department and follow the same route back to the Base Camp.

**Note: PHHS is Parish Hill High School and VBC is Veterans Base Camp.
