K9s on the Front Line
Sunday, September 10, 2017
K9s on the Front Line, a local nonprofit that serves local Veterans. We will be hosting our first annual 5k on Sunday, September 10th 2017 at Baxter Boulevard in Portland to raise awareness for Maine combat Veterans living with PTSD and to support our mission: Saving Dogs and Restoring Hope. The money raised from the event will go towards providing fully trained service dogs to Maine combat Veterans at absolutely no cost to the Veteran. We match shelter dogs with Veterans and take them through 16 weeks of training together with active duty police K9 handlers. These dogs counteract negative emotions with a sense of security and are trained to be supportive off their partner in environments where flashbacks may occur. The dogs are also taught specific tasks particular to their Veteran and their needs. Some of the tasks our dogs have learned are: going into a dark room and finding light switches to turn them on, reminding a Veteran to take meds, waking from nightmares, intercepting flashbacks or fits of extreme anger or sadness, guarding the Veterans back in line at a store, retrieving objects on command and so much more. By the end of training, these dogs are full blown battle buddies, completely certified to go anywhere with their Veteran. 100% of proceeds (like all of our events) will be used to provide dogs to Veterans in need.
