A description: Thoroughbred horses wont be the only ones running on the day of the Kentucky Derby!

Join us for this 5-kilometer race, barbecue and party that starts and finishes at our wonderful horse farm, Ironstone Farm, off Route 133 in Andover, MA.  Race day is Saturday, May 7, the afternoon of the Kentucky Derby. This festive run/walk (and party) event includes a great 5K course, tech shirts for the 5K participants, cotton shirts for the kids stick-horse race participants, and a post-race Kentucky Derby party that includes food, games, prizes and the Kentucky Derby live on screen at our horse farm!

The barbecue from Texas Roadhouse of Methuen includes ribs, barbecue chicken and pulled pork(choose two meats), plus three sides. Lenzis of Dracut expects to handle the beer and mint juleps. A live band, deejay, a horse-and-rider exhibition and lots of fun are planned. Please join us and support our nonprofit!

Entry fees for the 5K are $30 for adults and $20 for youth 12 and younger, and $10 for the kids stick-horse run. There are free tech shirts for the first 500. We will do what we can to get everone a shirt in the size they seek, but only those who registered by April 15 are guaranteed this as the tech shirts take several weeks to ship and we must order in advance. NOTE CHANGE: Online registration will end Thursday, May 5 at noon. People may register at the farm at 450 Lowell St. (Route 133), Andover during bib pickup on Thursday, May 5 from 3 to 7 p.m. On Friday, May 6, they can call 978-475-4056 Ext. 16 to register between 10 a.m and 1 p.m. There will be race-day registration at the farm on Saturday from 3 to 3:45 p.m.  Team registration is encouraged, and prizes will be awarded for the largest team. There is an individual hat contest for the best derby hat (men and women). Prizes will be given to the top 3 fastest women, men and kids 12 and younger. The deadline to be counted toward the largest team prize will be Thursday, May 5 at noon.

The barbecue meal costs $20 and a kids hotdog meal with sides costs $5.

Want to create a team? If you have questions, please email neilfater@challengeunlimited.org to add your team to the registration page (as this ensures accurate team information). Once a team is created, it appears in the drop-down menu after the question "Want to register as part of a team?"

STICK HORSE RACE FOR KIDS: Kids can bring their own stick horses, such as by making one ahead of time at a special event at the farm. There will be a limited number of stick horses to borrow or buy on race day. The kids race is at 4 p.m., followed by the 5K at 4:30.

PARKING: Due to the number of people expected, parking for the race will be a short distance down Lowell Street (Route 133) at the lot of Thermo Fisher. Buses will run back and forth from that lot to Ironstone Farm, beginning at 3 p.m. Large strollers may be difficult to accomodate; umbrella strollers are strongly encouraged.

This event supports Challenge Unlimited at Ironstone Farm, a nonprofit organization providing therapy for children with special needs, veterans and others. Please click here for more information about the nonprofit programs: ironstonefarm.org
